Menors Ferry General Store

20 Apr

Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park boasts beautiful vistas and plenty of rich history including the story of Bill Menor.  Bill traveled from Ohio to Montana, finally settling on the Snake River in 1892,“where the river was altogether in one place.” Near present-day Moose, he found that the river narrowed to a single channel, making it an ideal place to settle and start business, well businesses. Bill had a ferry service, owned a smokehouse, blacksmith shop, raised vegetables and served as a postmaster. Today, period furnishings are in the cabin, and the storekeeper still sells goods to visitors which now includes  Rawhide Studio’s jewelry !

The Grand Teton Association manages the store; open seven days a week during the peak summer season.

Wagon Wheels Snack food

2 Dec

I was searching the internet for some pictures of wagon wheels and ran across the Wagon Wheel snack cookie. I loved the retro label but what really caught my eye was the word, ” Canada”. Dave’s parents grew up in Fort Erie Ontario and we both grew up just over the boarder in Buffalo NY. Trips to Canada were common (no passports needed in those days) and we were familiar with many of the brands only available in Canada but not this snack food. A little research revealed that Kitchener Ontario was the birthplace of Dare Foods. The privately owned company has seven factories in Canada and the United States all still merrily making treats like Wagon Wheels,Whippets,Breton Crackers and Bear Paws just to mention a few. Dare Foods was one of the first large food manufacturers in Canada to declare its factories, PEANUT FREE! You can get even get Wagon Wheels in a flavor called Wowbutter, “a peanut free spread that tastes just like peanut butter”! I love food trivia!

Shows and Shops!

22 Jun

I just finished updating the Rawhide Studio jewelry outlets page on the website and blog and realized we now have 20 outlets spread from East to West! Wow! It has been a pleasure to work with everyone of them and along the way we have made some lovely friends. Over the summer our blog posts will be about some of these great stores and a few of our summer art fair adventures.

Now let’s travel to the beautiful and artsy little town of Buffalo WY. Walk down Main Street and you will soon see the best shop on Main St, Margo’s Pottery. Owned by potter Margo Brown, she focuses mainly on American made functional and whimsical crafts.  These include ceramics, blown glass, jewelry, furniture, fabric arts, wooden utensils and other items as well as metal art. The store’s vibe is friendly and relaxed and the quality of the work is top notch!

After shopping at Margo’s head over to the Occidental Hotel for a bite to eat and if you are there at the right time you can enjoy some live Bluegrass music. Plenty of famous people from Butch Cassidy to Teddy Rooseveldt have stayed at the hotel ( some ghost and original bullet holes too I’m told)!

Chock full of history and Bluegrass music, stop for lunch or stay the night in one of the wonderful rooms for guests.

Absaroka Western Designs and Tannery

When we say Rawhide Studio is Wyoming made we really mean it! Since the beginning we have tried to find a local source for our rawhide. When we searched the internet and came across Absaroka Western Designs in Dubois WY, we knew we had to make the 5 hour trek to see what the place had to offer. When we arrived at the shop we met the owner Joe Brandl and explained that we made jewelry out of rawhide and were looking for a Wyoming source. He took us through his workshop and then showed us some of his antelope and elk hides. We sorted through them, purchased a few and headed back to our campsite excited about our find! Of course the trip had to include some fishing for Dave and we made a connection with a gallery in Dubois called Pony Tracks.  All and all a great trip to a beautiful part of Wyoming!

Ready, Set, GO!

26 Jun

Rawhide Studio is going on the road! We will be heading out for a July 4th weekend show in Big Bear Lake   with several other stops along the way just for fun including VEGAS! The car is almost packed and ready to head out. Dave always tries to stuff a few last minute things in the car which tends to throw off the scientific packing job but we press on. See you on the West coast!
